5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Air Conditioner

Sometimes, no matter how many repairs you’ve made, your AC can no longer keep up. As HVAC professionals working in homes across the Valley, we see the same warning signs appear before a full replacement is necessary. If you’re unsure whether to repair your old unit or start fresh, these five signs can help you make an informed decision.

The average lifespan of a central air conditioning unit in Phoenix is around 12 years — sometimes less, due to our extreme summer heat. If your system was installed when flip phones were still cool, it’s time to plan for a replacement.

We see a lot of older units where parts are no longer available, especially with systems using R-22 refrigerant (which is now banned). Even if it’s still “working,” repairs get expensive when parts are discontinued or have to be special-ordered.

2. You're Calling for Repairs Every Summer

If you’ve had a tech out 2–3 times in the last year, it’s probably costing you more than you think. Most of the time, it starts with something small — a capacitor, a contactor, maybe a fan motor. However, when those costs accumulate year after year, you’re better off investing that money in a new system.

We tell homeowners this all the time: “If you’re dropping $600+ every season just to limp it through, you’re already halfway to a down payment on a new high-efficiency system.“

3. Your Energy Bills Are Getting Worse

Summer bills already hit hard in Arizona. However, if your usage remains steady and your SRP or APS bill continues to increase, your unit may be working twice as hard for half the result. Compressors and coils lose efficiency over time, even if they remain technically functional.

We often measure the temperature drop across your system (called a delta-T). If your return air is only dropping 10–12°F after cooling, that’s a sign the system is wearing down. New units usually hit 18–22°F difference on day one.

4. Hot and Cold Spots Around the House

If one room is freezing and the next is warm, you might have airflow issues, an undersized unit, or failing ductwork. But if those have already been checked or patched and the problem persists, your system may be the root issue.

We often see this in two-story homes, especially if the downstairs area is cool and the upstairs is too hot. Sometimes, a ductless mini-split system upstairs, combined with a new central system, is the ideal solution.

5. Running Constantly and Still Not Keeping Up

Your AC shouldn’t run non-stop from 9 a.m. to midnight — even in July. If it’s constantly cycling and you still feel a sticky or warm indoor environment, it’s underperforming.

Pro Tip: In Phoenix, your system should hit your set temp and cycle off periodically, even in 110°F weather. If it can’t, either the capacity isn’t right, or the system has degraded to the point where it’s time to move on.
